Paik, M.D., Ph.D.
my M.D. from Seoul National University and Ph.D. in preventive medicine
from Seoul National University. I did my residency training
in rehabilitation medicine at the Seoul National
At SNUH I did a 2 year clinical fellowship, studying
neurorehabilitation and clinical neurophysiology. I
became an assistant professor of Seoul National University
in 2001 and now a tenured professor since 2010. From
2005 to 2006, I studied brain plasticity in stroke patients
at Human Cortical
Physiology Section at NINDS/NIH, USA as a visiting fellow.
Currently I am serving as the first president of the
Society for NeuroRehabilitation (AOSNR), the member-at-large of the
World Federation for NeuroRehabilitation, and the Chair & CEO of
the Korean Society for NeuroRehabilitation. At Seoul National
University Bundang Hospital, I am serving as the Chief Strategy and Finance
I am a member of National Academy
of Medicine of Korea, and serving as a board of directors
for Korean Geriatric Society and Korean Dysphagia Society.
We are the
Korea. We earned Three-Year Accreditation in inpatient
rehabilitation programs for adults and children/adolescents
My research interests are to develop novel
therapeutic approaches for restoration of function in
human and to understand these mechanisms. I am also
interested in improving function in the elderly. The
principal diseases studied are stroke, dementia and
aging, and the principal symptoms I am studying are
weakness, sensory loss, dysphagia, spasticity, cognitive
dysfunction, excretory dysfunction, pain etc.
My work recently focuses on developing rational therapeutic
strategies to improve function and learning ability
in stroke patients. For evaluation, I employ neuromodulation
techniques such transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS),
transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and neuroimaging.
I am also interested in robotic rehabilitation and mobile-health
application in neurorehabilitation adopting virtual
reality and mobile device technologies.

Our paper “Effects of transcranial
direct current stimulation (tDCS) on post-stroke dysphagia,”published
at Restorative Neurology and Neuroscience in 2012 has
as a highlight paper from the IOS Press and brought
to the attention of the media in July 2012
our research work broadcasted on Microsoft Research.
